Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
This page outlines the frame of my psychotherapy practice. Its purpose is to help you understand the nature of the therapy I offer, and the commitment involved, ensuring we can establish a transparent working relationship from the very beginning.
The nature of the therapy
My approach is informed by psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking. Unlike some therapies that focus on teaching specific skills or strategies (e.g., “CBT”), this is a less structured approach that moves beyond the reduction of symptoms.
We will create a space to think together about whatever is on your mind. The goal is for you to get to know yourself more fully over time, and to develop into the person you wish to become. It is a process that values curiosity, reflection, and the therapeutic relationship itself.
Assessment
Therapy begins with an initial assessment, typically lasting three to four appointments. This is a trial period for both of us, in which we evaluate whether we are a "good fit", and whether this type of therapy will be useful for you. If we decide to proceed, we will move into an ongoing arrangement.
Frequency and duration
To facilitate meaningful personal work, consistency is essential. I work on a weekly basis—I do not offer fortnightly or casual appointments. Once established, your appointment will be at the same time and on the same day each week (unless your occupation involves shift work).
This is an open-ended arrangement with no set finish date. However, as a general guide, most patients attend for a minimum of 30–40 sessions (approximately one year).
Attendance and cancellation policy
Because the nature of this work relies on consistency, I hold a specific appointment time exclusively for you. I do not fill cancelled or rescheduled appointments with other patients—that hour belongs to you whether you attend or not. It is expected that all missed sessions are paid for.
I typically take eight weeks of leave per year. You will be given ample notice of these dates, and no fees are charged for weeks when I am away.
Fees and Payment
Fees are structured based on your current funding situation.
With a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP):
Fee: $240 per session.
Medicare rebate: Approximately $145.
Without a MHCP (or when sessions are exhausted):
Fee: $190 per session.
I consider fees on a case-by-case basis, taking into account individual circumstances such as student status or part-time employment. Please feel free to discuss this with me.
Payment is due on the day of the appointment. An invoice will be emailed to you at the conclusion of the session, and payment can be made directly via that invoice.
Confidentiality
The content of our sessions is confidential. No information will be shared with third parties without your consent, with the following exceptions:
If there is an immediate risk of serious harm to yourself or others.
If my files are subpoenaed by a court of law.
In the course of professional supervision, in which case your personal information is de-identified.
Contact between sessions
Direct contact between sessions is generally limited to administrative matters, such as appointment scheduling. I do not provide therapeutic support via phone, email, or text. In the event of an emergency or crisis, please contact emergency services (000) or your local hospital.
Ending therapy
Because therapy involves commitment, ending is a significant process. Should you decide to end therapy, I ask that we allow for a closing period to conclude our work together properly, rather than ending abruptly.
